My last network map in 2024 covers the Netherlands. It is the last remaining country that has not been mapped by me, but is completely surrounded by already mapped countries (microstates excluded). It is therefore long overdue for the Netherlands to join my collection.

The map is based on a 45° angle structures, a classical octolinear design. The only high-speed line (Hoogsnelheidslijn Zuid) breaks through the structure and is placed in the angular bisector of the 45° structure. In this way, the Eurostar, IC Direct and IC Brussel are brought into focus.

Other features of the map specific to the Netherlands are in particular the signatures for the frequencies, their reductions in the evening, on Fridays and/or weekends and alternative connections. Because the reductions to a less frequent service do not happen at the same time, a separate map for evenings, Fridays to Sundays does not make sense. I have chosen the line colours according to the operating companies. Alternatively, I could have shown the colours of the transport associations such as R-Net or Blauwnet.

The many half-hourly through connections in the Netherlands’ polycentric rail network were a real challenge. It was difficult to bundle the various services in a satisfactory way so that the map remained clear despite the many intersections. In view of the many upcoming changes in 2025, which I did not know in detail while creating the map, I did not arrange the lines to perfection. Probably, some intersections could probably still be optimised.

As always, I made an effort on analysing the timetables carefully and insert all station names correctly. However, if you discover any mistake in the maps, please let me know.

Please make sure to have a look at the newer 2025 version of this diagram.
